Types of Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain is a type of pain that involves the nerves. However, as
simple as that definition might be, it just scratches the surface of what
this type of pain really is and how it feels. It is all part of neuropathy,
or a dysfunction of the peripheral nerves in the body. Many different
types of neuropathic pain exist, and it is important to understand the
basics of what each type is to get a better understanding of the overall
picture of neuropathic pain.
Metabolic
One of the biggest causes of neuropathic pain today is diabetes, and this
is a type of metabolic dysfunction. Some types of nutritional deficiencies
can also lead to nerve pain. This includes not getting enough vitamin
B1. Many who abuse alcohol are lacking this vitamin, and alcoholism will
sometimes result in harsh neuropathic pain.
Toxic
Patients who have to undergo chemotherapy treatment as part of a prescribed
cancer care plan often end up feeling extraordinary amounts of pain due
to chemical exposure. Exposure to other chemicals, such as lead or even
arsenic may be responsible for nerve damage and pain in some patients.
Traumatic
Severe trauma can lead to neuropathic pain as well. One of the most common
examples is the phantom limb, in people who have had to undergo amputation
of an arm or leg. This type of neuropathic pain occurs when the nerves
continue to send and receive signals even though the limb no longer exists.
People suffering from complex regional pain syndrome as a result of trauma
or injury may deal with this type of pain too.
Compressive
Sometimes, as a result of injury or trauma, the nerves are compressed or
trapped, and this can place undue pressure on them. Naturally, this can
cause pain and numbness. One common type of compressive injury that affects
the nerves and can cause neuropathic pain is carpal tunnel syndrome. This
is common for those who do repetitive tasks with their hands, such as typing.
Hereditary
Some hereditary diseases can actually cause peripheral neuropathic pain.
Neurological experts who treat nerve pain are always interested in having
a complete medical history, as well as family medical history to see if
there can be some type of congenital connection to the pain.
Many Are Suffering from Neuropathic Pain Today
Hundreds of different conditions and diseases out there can cause neuropathic
pain and damage to the way your nerves function. It is important to catch
these issues as early as possible, as they degrade the nerves and cells,
and that means in some cases it is simply not possible to reverse the damage.
By catching the issues as early as possible, patients may be able to mitigate
further nerve injury from occurring.
Those who are suffering from any type of nerve damage or neuropathic pain
should not try to medicate themselves and they should never simply ignore
the problem and push through the pain. It is important to set up an appointment
with a qualified neurologist as soon as possible so the problem can be
dealt with immediately. Catching it as early as possible and getting the
right treatments helps to achieve the best chance of a pain-free life later on.
