Why We Need More African-Americans in Medicine

AS I REFLECT ON THE significance of Black History Month in my life, I can't help but think of the African-American mentors who blazed the trails before me. These are individuals who didn't allow their racial makeup to stand in the way of achieving their dreams. More importantly, as a result of their dedication and despite many obstacles, race didn't prevent them from contributing to the field. There are, fortunately for me and others, just too many to name. I'm inspired by and have benefited from African-American men and women (famous and relatively anonymous) who had a direct and indirect impact on my life and medical career. I'm thankful for them. I'm also thankful for African-American medical pioneers whose work extended and improved the quality of life for my friends and family. I'm confident that whether you know it or not, you can say the same.
