Med-Legal
As a board-certified neurologist with more than 20 years of experience
in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the brain, spine
and peripheral nerves, I am also certified by the American Board of Independent
Medical Examiners.
As a sports concussion expert witness, my qualifications include a unique
combination of background, training, communication skills and professional
experience that qualify me as an expert witness. Additionally, I am a
former athlete with an intimate and enduring understanding of the culture
and practical aspects of sport.
During my medical school career, I trained at the prestigious and competitive
Inteflex Pre-Med/Medical Program at the University of Michigan, one of
the nation's leading medical schools. My residency training and primary
specialty focus in Neurology resulted in the development of an expert
understanding of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and nervous
system, as well as extensive skill in examination, evaluation, and management
of Neurologic disorders and injury.
To further hone my skill in the field, I performed subspecialty fellowship
training in headache and interventional pain management while working
with leading anesthesiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists,
and orthopedic surgeons at the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital in
Baltimore, MD.
After completion of my training, I joined the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic
in Los Angeles, CA, whose physicians pioneered the sub-specialty of orthopedic
sports medicine. There, I have gained extensive clinical experience and
perfected professional skills evaluating and managing concussion, sports-related
neurological injury and pain in professional, Olympic, collegiate, high-school,
and youth/club athletes.
In addition, I have treated numerous individuals with concussion injuries
as the result of a work-related accident or other personal injury. As
a sought-out clinical expert on neurological topics, I have directed the
American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting lectures on concussion in
sports for multiple years. I also serve on the Board of Councilors of
the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Section on Sports Neurology and
was selected to create and direct the AAN online Continuing Medical Education
(CME) course for American Academy of Neurology Members on Sports Concussion.
Through these educational and leadership roles, I have sharpened excellent
communication and teaching skills, having lectured widely to professionals
(physicians, therapists, trainers, attorneys), as well as to the lay public
through frequent community-based educational programs. I have extensive
experience as a neurological consultant to television, radio and print
media outlets on subjects within the scope of my medical specialty. I
am a qualified and experienced expert witness for both plaintiff and defense
and a proficient independent medical examiner.
