Dr. Williams’ Sports Neurology practice involves a full scale, wide-ranging, comprehensive approach to the subspecialty. He is a concussion expert and his day to day practice involves the clinical evaluation and management of sports related concussion as well as concussive injury in military, work, and personal injury accidents. Dr. Williams’ practice involves the full temporal spectrum including:

  • Development of concussion protocols
  • Preseason education and baseline testing
  • Game/sideline coverage with surveillance for and management of acute concussive injury Clinic-based symptom management and return to play
  • Evaluation and management of prolonged symptoms and Post-Concussion Syndrome
  • Chronic Neurological Symptoms and Impairment in individuals with history of multiple concussive and sub-concussive injuries

Dr. Williams’ practice involves far more than just concussion management. There are a number of potential injuries to the nervous system arising from sports (and work or other) activities. These may involve Neurological emergencies or more sub-acute or chronic conditions.

Dr. Williams approaches Sports Neurology with the concept that he can work with an athlete, parent, agent, team, or league to comprehensively assess Brain and Nervous System Function and continuously monitor (usually with reassessment on a regular or yearly basis, sometimes before and after each season), over time. This kind of approach allows for early documentation and detection of any evidence of dysfunction, so that it can be immediately corrected. It also allows for identification of areas of relative weakness or areas that can be improved to optimize neurological function-improving athletic performance and reducing the risk of both Neurological and Musculoskeletal injury. Baselines and regular Neurological check-ups/reassessments should, in Dr. Williams’ opinion, be performed in all athletes. The benefit to athletic, academic, and professional performance as well as neurological health across the lifespan is significant.
