The Use of Telemedicine in Neurology
One relatively new but very promising area of practice for leading edge neurologists is telemedicine. As the name implies, this is a way for physicians to "virtually" consult with patients, across the country and in some cases, around the world. Widely hailed for its use in providing high-quality care to rural areas that don't have access to such advanced medical resources, telemedicine is helping neurologists diagnose, prescribe and implement treatment plans for patients' neurological concerns in a timely and effective manner.
Perhaps most importantly, this incredible technology is allowing us to stave off further damage to neurological function in patients who wouldn't otherwise have access or the ability to appropriately comply with the safest and most effective treatment recommendations.
How does it work?
Through the use of real-time audio-visual resources, a neurologist is able to virtually examine the suspected victim of a stroke in an underserved area of rural Indiana. The neurologist can see the patient, order testing via available medical personnel and quickly diagnose the problem - all while collaborating with available physicians to get a care plan in place that will lessen the effects of the event. Practicing medicine this way, in an area that wouldn't otherwise have appropriate access, helps to decrease response time to conditions that require rapid intervention to stave off catastrophic damage.
Telemedicine is a promising modality for a number of neurological conditions today. From underserved locations in rurally isolated areas to urban communities with insufficient access to neurological experts, this type of medicine will see significant growth in the coming years and we are proud to be at the forefront of that effort.
